PWD GRADUATES IN CEBU CITY ATTEND WORKSHOP HOSTED BY DSWD

The Department of Social Welfare and Development – Region 7 (DSWD-7) granted 51 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) a pre-employment briefing seminar on May 9 at the Area Vocational Rehabilitation Center (AVRC) II in Cebu City after graduating from their technical and vocational training courses.

The AVRC is a non-residential facility run by the DSWD and established to assist PWDs and other special groups providing them with various skill development programs on technical and vocational courses for socio-economic independence and productivity.

The trainees graduated from the following courses: Computer Technology, Commercial Cooking, Commercial Arts and Craft, Basic Cosmetology, Housekeeping Services, Dress and Apparel Technology, and Massage Therapy.

DMDP AND DOLE TRAIN PWD GRADUATES WITH THE EMPLOYMENT PROCESS

According to DSWD-7’s Regional Information Officer Leah Quintana, the pre-employment seminar aims to inform and teach all graduating PWDs on the recruitment process faced by most job seekers as well as the basic requirements during the interview process.

Aside from providing the graduates with an insight into how the employment and recruitment process works, DSWD hosted a workshop on how to prepare a resume and application letter for the recruitment process.

Resource persons from the Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) were also present in the event to discuss other aspects of the employment process. Ma. Concepcion Encabo and Jean Marie of DMDP Cebu City discussed Employment Readiness while Rosana Velado of DOLE explained applicable labor laws and regulations to PWD workers in the country.

The invited resource persons also discussed collective bargaining and employer-employee negotiations based on existing labor to educate PWDs of their employee rights. Quintana also enlightened the graduates on the importance of organizing labor unions to protect their rights, as well as participating in policy and decision-making processes.
